I was diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E) when I was just 12, something that dramatically changed my way of life.

At 22, I discovered climbing. This amazing, brilliantly wonderful obsession that gave me the opportunity to grab my life back again

10 years on and I still absolutely love climbing, love being outdoors, exploring new places and having fun.

We went over to Yorkshire on Saturday to explore Rylstone. Met up with @alexpoyzer and had a brilliant day. Sunshine, climbing and sunburn.

Climbing 'Oread' at Gardoms, on perfect jams 😍 Had to drag myself out of the house today, really wasn't feeling it and didn't fancy battling the joint pain but, really glad that I persevered. Had such a pleasent few hours, in the sunshine, climbing some very enjoyable routes (even the ones that were a bit dirty on top and made the last few moves 'interesting').

Well, just as I thought. Covid mixed with a chronic illness isn't fun. I'm testing negative now but it's turned my symptoms up by quite a few notches, set me back a bit and left me patheticly weaker than a pathetic weak thing. Luckily, after spending all morning looking out at the blue sky, I did manage to drag myself out of the house on Saturday afternoon (with Steph's help) and we got a couple of fun routes in. A 5c and 6a, that I'm claiming as at least 7b for each 🙈

It was wonderful to get out for some fresh air and a few climbs yesterday. First routes this month due to health and the weather not playing ball with my days off.

With the mist engulfing the crag and a couple of commiting moves over a typical Wharncliffe landing, I fully expected and prepared myself to be down-climbing from the ledge.

However, there was no time for faffing and self-doubting to set in. After barely blinking, I had confidently committed and after a few moves I was past the crux, smiling and enjoying a moment of peace and just pure bliss. I still find it incredible that regardless of how fleeting this moment may be, it makes all the other things you have going on seem insufficient. Whether it is pain, worry, or just day-to-day stress.

People climb for many reasons. I climb for moments like this. ❤

Stunning day in the Peak yesterday 😍

Climbing has been a bit frustrating due to my symptoms flaring up a few notches recently.
Not helped by the fact that I’ve been a tad hard on myself for the lack of energy and failing to meet my own climbing expectations.

Rather than trying to push myself or even take it too easy, I needed to bring the fun back. After a lazy morning at home, I had a vague idea to go and climb 10 VS’s. The plan was to walk up to Stanage, do a warm-up and see how everything felt - no big expectations, no pressure.

Well, Stanage must of been perfectly aligned in the universe Thursday afternoon. The grit conditions were near perfect and I felt more confident with each route. It’s been such a long time since I’ve found myself in this mindset. I was able to enjoy each and every single move, play around and really focus on the basic foundation of movement. In the end I climbed 15 routes. Some old favourites, some that I’ve backed off soloing before and a couple of new ones. It was a fantastic afternoon. Probably my favourite this year and one that will be hard to recreate but one that’s reminded me how much I love climbing.

Desperation - quite an apt route name. It's become a bit of a nemesis. I backed off the solo the other year, after reaching the second crux.

I came back with a rope after lockdown. Managed to tweak my hand on the start, so traversed off. Had an half arsed attempt again a few weeks later but couldn't even get off the ground.

Tried AGAIN last night, got the start quickly, however, ran out of light - so escaped off yet AGAIN.

I’ve built it up quite a bit in my head now. I instantly feel weaker when walking past it these days and just feels like a chore to come back.

Have you ever had a mental block on a route? Or a climb you dread to go back to?

I had an enjoyable few hours soloing at Castle Naze yesterday.

A lot of routes are really fun, especially in the lower grades. I even found myself doing a few happy dances after topping out.

*would like to say that the absurd amount of chalk caked on many of the routes was nothing to do with me.

Managed to escape the wind and explore the far end of Baslow yesterday. Had a great afternoon! Some proper ‘traditional’ routes that you wished were twice as long, one that was bold, dirty and covered in lichen with a grass-pulling top out and one that was just pure jamming bliss.

Proof that the sun did come out on Sunday (albeit very briefly). I was volunteering as a leader for the Women’s Trad Festival.

It was amazing to see and meet so many wonderful people who were keen to learn trad and improve their climbing skills. Even the barrage of rain on Sunday didn’t stop the smiles or everyone heading out to the crags for ground based learning and soggy abseils. The learners certainly had the full “British Summer Trad” experience. Including taking shelter at @outside.co.uk, who sponsored the event and supplied free cups of tea and coffee throughout the weekend.

Thanks to the WTF organisers, core volunteers, mentors, fellow leaders and of course the attendees who made this such a fantastic weekend. It was a pleasure to be apart of it.

Ange climbing high on Skyline Buttress. “Ruby Marlee meets Dr Holingsworth” it gets a trad grade due to starting up a VS but with 10 bolts on the main wall, it’s a very pleasant sport route.

Smiling, happy climbing!! Recently, I’ve managed to sneak in 3 trips to North Wales. It’s been amazing to refresh my skills and climb above the sea and get some bigger mountain routes climbed. It’s been a few years since I’ve done anything as adventurous. And of course, managed a few visits to my favourite place of them all - the slate quarries 😍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Went and explored Kinder North last week. It’s one hell of a walk-in (around 16k round trip), only managed to climb one route in the end but, what a route. That and the location made the effort to get there (and back) worth it. Had a good look at the other areas so, should hopefully have more of an idea where everything is for next time. That is, if I can ever trick my body into going up there again. I’m still feeling the effects 4 days later 🙈

Shortly before getting pumped out on the sloping finishing holds. Managed to get 3 days climbing in this week. Great to catch up with some old friends - a few routes and lots of smiles. Pretty impressed with my leading head although sadly my endurance has yet to make an appearance this year. Looking forward to getting back out later next week.

“The Line, HVS 5a at Curbar - a hidden gem”. It certainly is! Absolutely beautiful, the best route I’ve climbed in quite some time. Tucked away, from the main walls but well worth finding.

A beautiful afternoon yesterday at Rivelin. Making the most of a quiet local crag. I must of walked past this climb numerous times over the years and never noticed it. “Seville Flake”, VS 4c. A bold start, to good gear then a committing move over to the flake (much easier for the tall), where you’re rewarded with more gear, fantastic holds and a great a position.

Rivelin also gave us a perfect opportunity to teach Steph how to abseil.

Many climbers don’t enjoy abseiling and some consider it dangerous. However, like climbing - it’s knowing how to do it safely, assess the risks and being able to protect yourself and climbing partners. If you’d like to learn or refresh your skills, please get in touch. I’m taking bookings from the 29th.

Paradise Wall, a 3* HS 4b. I forgot how nice this climb is, great holds and really well protected. Lovely, happy climbing.
